Mermaid Tail Cake… and a Mermaid Party

For Charlotte’s 4th Birthday, she wanted a Mermaid Party.

I had a blast creating this undersea world!

Because the party took place the day after my “Candyland” Party, I used some of the same materials for both parties.

The table cover and runner easily transitioned from one party to the next, especially when covered with a net. And I reused the candy jars (filled with sprinkles) to fit the theme!

Mermaid Tail Cake

  • cooking spray

  • 1 16-18 ounce box vanilla cake mix, plus needed ingredients

  • 1 tub vanilla frosting

  • Necco candy wafers or candy melts

  • mermaid themed sprinkles


  • Preheat oven to 350°. Coat 9 inch round cake pan with cooking spray and bake cake as directed. Cool cake.
  • Coat with frosting and place in freezer for two hours.
  • Once frozen, carefully dip the top of the cake in mermaid themed sprinkles.
  • Starting at the bottom of the cake, apply candy wafers in a circular motion. Be sure to alternate colors to create the tail effect.
